2017 Governor’s Cup: Thomas Otu, Others Qualify for Main Draw

Main Draw action of the Governor’s Cup will kick-off on Monday, 9th, at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan. The Main Draw action will feature 11 Nigerians, with 3 players out of the 11 coming in through the 2 rounds of qualifying matches.

In the first round of qualifiers, Thomas Otu beat fellow Nigerian Emma Dim 6-0, 6-4, while Emmanuel Idoko defeated Ghana’s Benjamin Palm 6-3, 6-2.

Nigeria’s former national champion, Henry Atseye thrashed Stephen Augustine 6-2, 6-1, while Christian Paul defeated another Ghanaian, Benjamin Fumi 6-2, 6-1.

In the Women’s qualifying round, Ronke Akingbade beat Sabath Ibrahim 6-0, 7-6(2) to set up a second round qualifying match-up with Patience Onebamhoin, who received a 1st round bye.

In the second and last round of qualifying matches, Thomas Otu faced Emmanuel Idoko in an enthralling match that spanned three sets. Otu edged Idoko 6-3 in the 1st set, before being narrowly beaten to lose the 2nd 5-7. In the 3rd set, Otu put up a commanding display to win 6-3 and as a result, progressed to the Main Draw.

In the other match, Henry Atseye was pitted against Christian Paul in what was a one-sided affair. Christian Paul fell to an embarrassing 6-1, 6-0 defeat that left him devastated, hitting his racquet on the hardcourt before angrily storming off. The win earned the former national champion a place in the Main Draw.

In the Women’s 2nd Round clash, Patience Onebamhoin, who got a 1st round bye beat Ronke Akingbade 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 to also qualify for the Main Draw.

Thomas Otu, Henry Atseye, and Patience Onebamhoin, will now join Clifford Enosorogbe, who is the highest ranked Nigerian player in the tournament, Christopher Bulus, Abdulmumuni Babalola, Joseph Imeh Ubon, Christopher Itodo, Adetayo Adetunji, Oyinlomo Quadri, Sarah Adegoke in the Main Draws of the event.
