The Junior category of the CBN Tennis Championship will kick off on Monday, 2 April through to Saturday, 7 April at the National Stadium, Surulere and the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan in Lagos.
The event which is aimed at attracting, identifying and developing players within the junior circuit will feature Boys & Girls in the Under 10, 12, 14, 16 & 18 categories.
Players, who plan on participating, and have not played in the Junior ITA Circuit or who have outstanding age queries must bring along three years of primary and two years of secondary school results as it would be required during screening.
According to the director of the International Tennis Academy, Godwin Kienka, the tournament will be open to all players within the age bracket.
“It’s an open tournament,” Mr. Kienka disclosed. “The CBN Juniors- ITA Circuit Junior tournament is the only tournament in the world where there’s no cap to entry. As long as you’re within the age bracket and you can play, you’ll be allowed to play. But we’re very strict on age.”
The preliminaries will hold from Tuesday 3rd to Thursday 5th and will take place at the National Stadium because of transportation and traffic, which means early events will be done at the stadium, while the semifinals and final slated for Friday 6th and Saturday 7th, respectively will be taken to the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, because of the ambience and its capacity.
Matches are slated for 9:30/10am. And the players will be well taken care of. Three square meals for all players will be provided, while those from outside Lagos will be accommodated.
On the objective of the CBN Junior Tennis Championship, Mr. Kienka noted: “To have a junior player win the junior tournament and the senior tournament in the same year, that’s a big goal. That will be the highlight of this project.”
“So we’re working hard to make sure we can motivate them to that. That’s one expectation. There’s a N200,000 stake on it if they do that.”
Tennis kits/equipment will be given to winners to help in furtherance of their tennis.
