Germany’s Angelique Kerber came out on top in the battle of former world number ones against Karolina Pliskova in their Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship quarter-final match in UAE.
The two-time Grand Slam champion Kerber powered past Pliskova 6-4, 6-3 to move into the semifinals of the Dubai Championship.
The match, a replay of the 2016 US Open final won by the 30-year-old German, lasted 75 minutes, with Kerber never facing a break point.
Kerber next plays defending champion Elina Svitolina in a repeat of last season’s Dubai semi-final, which Svitolina won.
The top seeded Ukrainian kept alive her hopes of retaining the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
“I’m definitely happy, the way I’ve been handling the pressure and tough moments,” Svitolina said after the match.”
“I just stayed in the moment, I was fighting, waiting for my opportunity, trying to earn opportunities.
“This was pretty much it – she gave me a chance and I took it. This was the key.”
This will be the 12th meeting between Kerber and Svitolina, with Kerber looking to end a four-match losing streak against the defending Dubai champion from Ukraine.
