BNP Paribas Open: Simona Halep starts well as Naomi Osaka continues to impress

Top seed and World No.1 Simona Halep started her BNP Paribas Open campaign with a bang as she defeated powerful Kristyna Pliskova to move into the third round, while 20-year-old Naomi Osaka continued her impressive run, beating Agnieszka Radwanska.

Simona Halep defeated Krystina Pliskova 6-4, 6-4 to remain unbeaten against opponents ranked outside Top 30 at Indian Wells.

“I was ready to play. I was ready to work and ready to fight,” Halep said. “It was a nice day.

“It wasn’t an easy match. But I am really happy I won my first match here and I get a chance to play again.”

Halep, the 2015 BNP Paribas Open champion, will now face American wild card Caroline Dolehide in the third round.

Japanese, Naomi Osaka collected another win over a highly decorated WTA star, outplaying No. 31 seed Agnieszka Radwanska to advance to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open.

Naomi Osaka’s run through in Indian Wells continued, as she followed up her first round victory over Maria Sharapova with a second round triumph over No. 31 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, 6-3, 6-2.

Osaka will now face American qualifier Sachia Vickery, who stunned third seed Garbine Muguruza 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, in the third round at Indian Wells.

In another match played, ninth seed Petra Kvitova equalled the longest winning streak of her career in dramatic fashion, capturing her 14th consecutive victory after three hours and 17 minutes on court with a seesawing 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-4 victory over Yulia Putintseva to also move into the third round of the BNP Paribas Open.
