China Open: Kvitova Sets up Muguruza Meeting
In-form Petra Kvitova set up a third round meeting with defending champion, Garbine Muguruza after a 6-4 6-1 victory over Chinese qualifier, Wang Yafan at the China Open in Beijing.
The 143-ranked Wang offered some early resistance- breaking the Kvitova serve for a 3-2 lead- but the Czech leftie hot back with 10 of the next 12 games to storm into the next round.
Next up for Kvitova is a blockbuster contest against Muguruza, who has struggled for form and consistency since winning the French Open in June.
Kvitova bagged her first title of the year just last week in Wuhan, and another strong run on Beijing will improve her chance of earning a place in the prestigious WTA Finals in Singapore.
While Kvitova retains hopes of joining the elite 8 two more players booked their places in the season-ending finale on Tuesday.
Dominika Cibulkova’s exit from the China Open on Tuesday means Agnieszka Radwanska and Karolina Pliskova have now qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore.
Radwanska returns to defend the title she won in impressive fashion last year, while Pliskova will be making her debut in the competition.
