Nigeria’s tennis star, Joseph Imeh outclassed former national champion, Henry Atseye 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday to stay on course for the Men’s Singles at the Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship in Kano.
Atseye, the 2013 CBN Open champion was no match for his much younger opponent as he got knocked out in the first round.
Thomas Otu, a former national champion, made a sloppy start but recovered on time to edge Martins Abamu 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(4), setting up a second round clash with Joseph Iyorovbe who beat Abayomi Philips 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Emmanuel Idoko, who’s in superb form at the moment moved into the second round with a resounding 6-2, 6-0 win over wildcard, Idris Aliyu, while Uche Okparaoji’s impressive run from the qualifying round continued with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nonso Madueke.
Abdulmumin Babalola thumped Dauda Aliyu 6-0, 6-0 to move into the second round, also.
In the Women’s Singles, defending champion Christy Agugbom thrashed Omotayo Osewa 6-0, 6-3 to set up a second round clash with Ronke Akingbade moved into the next round when Aminat Quadri retired while trailing 5-1 in the first set of Tuesday’s meeting.
Aanu Aiyegbusi claimed bragging rights over Team Ndoma-Egba teammate Osariemen Airhunmwunde with a 3-6, 6-3, 5-2(rtd) victory. Next up for Aiyegbusi is a quarter final tie with Sarah Adegoke, who took out youngster, Oyinlomo Quadre 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round.
Last year’s runner-up Blessing Samuel made a bold statement as she whitewashed Christie Nwakwo 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the second round.
In the Men’s Doubles, Abdulmumin Babalola teamed up with veteran Shehu Lawal to batter the duo of Adewale Samson and Akinwumi Taiwo 6-0, 6-1, while former national champions, Thomas Otu and Henry Atseye beat Badamasi Ibrahim and Ali Mukhtar 6-3, 6-3.
