Four out of the seven Nigerians playing in the qualifying stage of the Dayak Tennis Championship made it to the second round in Abuja.
Highest ranked Nigerian in the qualifiers, Christian Paul also moved into the second round at the expense of fellow Nigerian Tochukwu Ezeh with a hard fought 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory. Paul will only now have Franco Feitt to beat in the second round to make the main draws.
Nigeria’s no. 1, Joseph Imeh made it to the second round of qualifying after making light work of countryman Michael Michael to win 6-1, 6-1. The 20-year-old will now face Stephan Gerritsen, who beat Hardeep Sandhu 6-3, 6-4, for a place in the main draws.
Clifford Enosoregbe beat India’s Rishabdev Raman 6-2, 6-2 to set up a second round clash with Mirko Martinez of Switzerland.
Sylvester Emmanuel completed the list of Nigerians in the second round after edging Sizya Kivanda 7-6, 7-6.
Olaniyi Ibiwoye however, failed to join the train as he fell to a 3-6, 6-7 defeat at the hands of Britain’s Darryl Hale.
Second round action continues Sunday, 22 April at the Tennis Complex of the National Stadium in Abuja.
