Divine Nweke of Denmark put up a brilliant performance to defeat Nigeria’s Oyinlomo Quadre and lift her first title of the season in Cotonou on Saturday.
Nweke’s victory over Quadre comes exactly a week after she fell to defeat to the Nigerian in the final of the U-18 ITF Junior in Lome.
Against Quadre this time, the 14-year-old Dane started out strongly as she raced to a 6-1 opening set win. But the Nigerian responded in the second set with some of her very best tennis to level the match at 1-6, 6-3, thereby forcing a decider. Nweke would regain composure in the third set, showing quick movements and stupendous shot-making to claim a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory and not only deny Quadre a second consecutive title but also, clinch her first title of the season.
This is Nweke first victorious final in three attempts this year after playing in the final of an ITF event in Namibia in May and in Lome last week, losing both.
Quadre, despite the defeat, has the doubles title in bag as she leaves the large port city of Cotonou. The Nigerian sensation continued her brilliant partnership with Cameroon’s Toumbou Lemongo to defeat the Indian duo of Guari Bhagia and Bhakti Parwani 6-3, 6-2 and claim their second straight doubles title on the circuit.
