French Open: Novak Djokovic continues to impress as Alexander Zverev stutters into third round

Former world number one, Novak Djokovic progressed to the third round of the French Open with straight sets victory, while Alexander Zverev had to dig deep for victory.

Djokovic was put to the test by 21-year-old Spanish qualifier Juame Munar but sealed a third round berth with a 7-6(1), 6-4, 6-4 win.

The Serbian squandered a 5-2 lead in the first set but his experience came to the fore and he repeatedly remained composed to outlast the dogged Spaniard.

Djokovic will face 13th seed, Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round after the Spaniard’s 6-4 7-5 6-3 win over Santiago Giraldoof Colombia.

Second seed, Alexander Zverev was made to work hard for victory by Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic. The German had to cope with the frustration of an error-riddled start, and then crushed his racket in the second set due to more frustration.

The 21-year-old however, held his nerves to reach the French Open third round with a 2-6 7-5 4-6 6-1 6-2 win. He will face 26th- seeded Bosnian Damir Dzumhur next.

Kei Nishikori also got through in five as he beat French hopeful, Benoit Paire 6-3, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the third round.

In the women’s draw, world number one, Simona Halep overcame a sluggish start to claim a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alison Riske to advance to the second round. Halep will face Taylor Townsend in the second round.

Also, Ukraine’s fourth seed Elina Svitolina reached the third round with a 6-3 6-4 win over Slovakia’s Viktoria Kuzmova, while two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, seeded eighth, beat Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena 6-0 6-4.
