Governor’s Cup Star Set to Rule Tennis World

Six years ago after Elina Svitolina thrilled the crowd at the Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos, to win the 11th edition of Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championships, she is set to become the No. 1 female tennis player in the world.

So much has happened from when a very young 16-year old Elina triumphed in Lagos till now.

Elina Svitolina has made a steady rise up the charts since 2013. She won her first WTA title at the 2013 Baku Cup, and by doing so, she became the first teenager to win a WTA tournament since 2012.

Elina has always been driven and motivated to succeed and with no ceiling on her expectations, she has emerged as one of the stars of the WTA tours.

“My main goal is to be No. 1,” Elina said in February this year and she has doggedly worked towards it.

Now ranked fourth in the world, Elina is into the fourth round of the ongoing US Open. Therefore, her hopes of claiming the world no. 1 ranking after the US Open are still alive.

She’d be hoping, as well as her fans the world over, to upset her highly-ranked opponents and clinch the US Open title. And with that, we could see the once teenage Elina who thrived in Lagos, rule the tennis world.
