Main draw action gets underway at the Governor’s Cup next week, with some familiar names returning to the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club to vie for honours..
Many players have starred in Lagos, and gone on to make huge marks on the global game, but who sits atop the pile? Here’s our top five countdown…
4. Elina Svitolina
Elina Svitolina won the Governor’s Cup in 2011; and less than a year after that success in Lagos, the supremely talented Ukrainian captured her first WTA title in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Fair to say, her rise… has been rapid!
Svitolina has competed in the main draws of every Grand Slam since the 2012 US Open- famously reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in 2015.
It’s been another steady year for the Odessa-born Ukrainian, the highlights of which have been victory over Serena Williams at the Olympics, and a fine triumph over world number one, Angelique Kerber at the China Open.
Svitolina already has four WTA titles to her name, and the smart money will be on the 22-year-old Ukrainian to earn a lot more.
Her efforts have been rewarded with a current ranking of 19, but she has been as high as number 14 in the world.
Based on her current form, she seems destined to climb above that very very soon.
We shouldn’t be too surprised by Elina’s progress. She excelled as a junior- winning the Roland Garros Girl’s title in 2010, and it’s certainly not out of place to expect her to lay her hands on one of the really big ‘uns in the near future.
