Main draw action gets underway at the Governor’s Cup next week, with some familiar names returning to the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club to vie for honours..

Many players have starred in Lagos, and gone on to make huge marks on the global game, but who sits atop the pile? Here’s our top five countdown…

1. Dominika Cibulkova

Dominika Cibulkova stands at only 5 ft. 3 in, but she packs some of the biggest punches on the WTA tour, and she has defied her relatively small size to rise into the world’s top 10.

The Slovakian ‘Pocket Rocket’ competed at the Governor’s Cup as a 16-year-old in 2005, winning just one main draw match over the two legs, but by 2007, she was already mixing it up with the big girls at the Slams- notably losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round at Roland Garros, and falling to Vika Azarenka in Round 2 of the US Open.

She would continue her gradual development until 2009- when she really exploded. An Australian Open fourth round showing was followed by a dreamy semi-final run at Roland Garros- during which she famously dismantled Maria Sharapova in the quarter finals.

She has reached the quarter-final or better in each of the four Grand Slams, with her best showing coming at the 2014 Australian Open, where she lost the final to Li Na.

The 27-year-old might have fallen just short of a Grand Slam crown, but she has six WTA titles to her name, including two in 2016.

Dominika Cibulkova has established herself in the top order of the women’s game.
