Grigor Dimitrov held his nerves to beat a determined David Goffin to win the biggest title of his career.
The Bulgarian beat Goffin 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 30 minutes, in what is his second victory over the Belgian in less than a week.
Dimitrov, who’s set to become the new world no. 3 on Monday, becomes the sixth debutant to triumph at the tournament at the first time of asking.
David Goffin fought bravely, but could not repeat the heroics that saw him see off both Nadal and Federer earlier this week. He will now turn his attention to the Davis Cup Finals with Belgium next week.
Dimitrov’s financial prize for finishing the tournament unbeaten is £1.9m, but finally landing his first major title may end up meaning more to him at the end of his career if he can build on this triumph.
