“I’m fit and ready to go”, Joseph Imeh confident ahead of Rainoil Tennis Open

Nigerian youngster, Joseph Imeh has expressed his readiness for the inaugural Rainoil Tennis Open, with the youngster declaring himself ‘fit and ready to go’ ahead of the clay-court event.

The qualifying rounds of the Rainoil Tennis Open starts on Saturday, 9 December, with main draw action set to begin on Monday, 11 December.

Imeh has been the nearly-man in Nigerian tennis this season, following runner-up finishes at the CBN Senior Tennis Championship and the Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship, but rather than being disappointed, the player is drawing positives from those results as he looks to finally get over the line at the Rainoil Tennis Open.

“Well, I’ll say I really prepared for it (Rainoil Tennis Open) from my last performance in Dala, where I got to the final… With the way I performed from the first round to the final, I know I’m fit and ready to go”.

The 20-year-old however knows that winning the title will be a typically difficult task, with a lot of very good players in the draw.

“What I expect is a big challenge from the other players- tough matches from the first to the last round”. Imeh continued.

One of the players expected to rival Imeh for the title is Sylvester Emmanuel, who also spoke about his expectations from the Rainoil Tennis Open. The Barcelona-based Emmanuel opines that the fact that the tournament will be played on clay makes it even more tricky for Nigerian players, who are more used to competing on hard courts.

“I’m preparing because this is the first tournament we are having on clay and it’s going to be tough. It’s not going to be easy because most of the players in Nigeria usually play on hard courts so it’s going to be interesting. I’m looking forward to that”.

Imeh and Emmanuel are expected to feature for their respective teams this weekend as the NCC Tennis Cup comes to a close. Emmanuel’s Team Offikwu take on Team Ndoma-Egba in the third-place play-offs from 7-8 December, while Imeh spearheads Team Muller as they confront Team Civil Defence in the big final from 10-11 December. Both matches will be contested at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
