World number one, Novak Djokovic has pulled out of next week’s China Open in Beijing because of an elbow injury.
The 29-year-old has not played since losing the US Open to Stan Wawrinka on September 12.
Djokovic did not give a specific return date, and it is unclear whether he will be fit for the Shanghai Masters, which begins a week after Beijing.
“I am very sad not to be able to compete at the China Open this year. I am still recovering from my elbow injury and have been advised not to play tournaments until my condition improves and allows me to compete.”
Djokovic has a very strong record in China, winning the China Open six times, and boasting a perfect 29-0 record at the event.
“The China Open is one of my favourite tournaments. I have had a lot of success there, winning the title six times. I love competing in front of the passionate Chinese fans, and I look forward to coming back to Beijing in the future”, the 13-time Grand Slam winner added.
The China Open begins on October 3.
