Nigerian Players went from not being ranked in the U-14 CAT rankings to being placed significantly on the final tournament position after the completion of the ITF/CAT African 14 and Under Circuit in Togo.
The tournament which commenced on 18 April and had its final curtain fall on Tuesday, 24 April, saw Gabriel Inyang and Joseph Fortune represent Nigeria in the Boys event, while the trio of Serena Teluwo, Yakubu Oiza and Aluko Princess Olamide led the charge for glory in the Girls category in the small West African nation.
Gabriel Inyang and Joseph Fortune could only reach the round of 16, while the Girls – Teluwo, Oiza, and Olamide went a step further as they bowed out in the quarterfinals.
The players however, continued playing to strengthen their position on the tournament ranking list.
On the tournament’s final ranking list, Joseph Fortune nearly made it into the top 10 as he finished the tournament ranked 11th, with Gabriel Inyang not far behind on 13th.
Oiza Yakubu, on the girls ranking list, made it to the top 10 as she finished 5th, while Serena Teluwo and Princess Aluko were ranked 11th and 12th, respectively.
Speaking after the completion of the tournament, Coach Inyang said: “Its a good way to go, especially if you consider what the other countries are doing in terms of preparations.”
“Small countries like Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast are really doing great in the area of developing and supporting their young talents,” Inyang told TennisNG.
