World no. 2, Garbine Muguruza has made known her desire to get back to the top of the WTA rankings, which is presently occupied by Romania’s Simona Halep.
The Spaniard was one of the five world no. 1s this year. She achieved her highest ranking position after the US Open, and is currently just 40 points away from Simona Halep.
“I don’t think there has been a year when there have been so many different no. 1s. It was a very interesting year. It feels like every player has a chance.” Muguruza said, as quoted by Fox Sports.
“Players can have incredible weeks and almost every big tournament there was a different winner.
“A lot of players can win the big tournaments next year and be a top-five player if they are talented and hungry. Sloane Stephens has been very talented and always had great potential but put it all together to win the US Open.”
Muguruza feels the rankings is one of her goals. “It is important to become no.1 again, of course,” she added. “Once you do it or win a Grand Slam title, and I’ve won two now, you want to experience again that incredible moment. I’m lucky I’ve been there and I want to work for it and be hungry.
“Consistency is the main thing. I sometimes miss a lot and can lose matches.”
