Seventh seed Joao Menezes of Brazil put up a brilliant performance on Centre Court; overcoming top seed Markus Eriksson to be crowned Tombim Abuja Open champion on Saturday.
Eriksson started quite well in the opening set, as he opening up an early 2-1 lead, but Menezes came out of the blocks, firing on all cylinders to claim the first set 6-2 over the Swede, who now looked bereft of ideas.
The Brazilian controlled the tempo in the second as he raced to a 5-1 lead. Eriksson would however, regain some composure to reduce to deficit to 4-5 but couldn’t just complete a stunning comeback as Menezes held serve to triumph 6-2, 6-4 in Abuja, capping off a sensational week in Nigeria’s capital.
When asked about the secret of his incredible performance all week, Menezes said: “Well, in this kind of place, I just try to dissipate the play… I try to stay as good as possible till the end. And I got lucky.”
The Tombim Abuja Open has now ended and we can now look forward to the start of the second ITF Futures event which is the Dayak Tennis Championship slated to get underway on Monday, 23 April.
