Joao Menezes, who won the Tombim Open title last week, outlasted Jakub Paul of Switzerland to reach the quarterfinals of the Dayak Tennis Championship in Abuja today.
Menezes, 22, secured a narrow 6-4, 7-6(4) victory in almost 2 hours to close out the evenly contested match. The Brazilian will now face Zimbabwe’s Takanyi Garanganga, who bounced back from a disappointing first set loss to edge Frenchman, Tom Jomby 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in 2 hours of relentless battle.
Top seed, Youseff Hossam went the way of another three sets against Alexandru Danes and needed 2 hours and 18 minutes to claim a 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4 victory to reach his third quarterfinals this year. The Egyptian will next play India’s Suraj Prabodh, who beat Remi Boutillier 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, for a place in the semifinals.
Fourth seed Maximilian Neuchrist made light work of Danylo Kalenichenko, winning 6-4, 6-2, while France’s Jaimee Floyd Angele retired when he was 6-7, 0-3 down against Dutch qualifier, Stephan Gerritsen.
Gerritsen will play second seed and Tombim Open finalist Markus Eriksson, who defeated Thomas Setodji 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
In the doubles event, the duo of Takanyi Garanganga and Moez Echargui claimed a narrow 7-6(3), 7-6(4) victory over Dutch pair, Stephan Gerritsen and Jelle Sels to advance to the semifinals, while Tombim Open doubles champion, Markus Eriksson and Maximilian Neuchrist edged Remi Boutillier and Alexis Klegou 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 to also advance to the last four in Abuja.
