Marylove Edwards already has a title under her belt within less than a month since she left Nigeria for The United States of America (USA) to kick start her professional career.
She virtually strolled past Nina Sidhu 6-0, 6-1 to claim the USTA Celsius Level 6 girls’ 14 & Under tournament.
She was dominant all through the competition, winning all her matches convincingly in straight sets.
En route to the final, Marylove defeated Anastasiia Pestereva in the round of 16 in 6-3, 6-2.
She complimented that by thrashing Nicole Ciemark 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before booking her place in the final with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Stella Rundova.
One of the most talented youngsters in Africa, Edwards finished second at this year’s CBN Senior Tennis Championships, becoming the first junior to reach the final. That performance came after a one-week training at the IMG Academy in Florida in April.
IMG founder Nick Bolletieri said of Marylove, “Now this young girl is very different. She’s a super athlete. Very handy. Only a few can get away with that style.”
“I have been training very hard since I started at IMG and was so happy to win my first trophy,” said an excited Marylove.”
IMG Academy has produced multiple Grand Slam winners likes Serena and Venus Williams, Bjorn Borgand, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Monica Seles.
Are we going to finally see a Grand Slam winner of Nigerian decent? Time will surely tell.
