Top seed Rafael Nadal fought back from a set down to beat Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer to advance to the fourth round of the US Open in New York.
The 31-year old World No. 1, lost the first set but came back to win 6-7(3-7), 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 after 3 hours and 16 minutes.
“All the matches have been very tight – I am very happy,” Nadal said. “. . . mentally, I fought a lot until that moment, then I think I played better.”
Nadal will now go on to face Alexandr Dolgopolov in the fourth round.
Roger Federer, in his match, was as ruthless as ever as he took out Feliciano Lopez in straight sets. He put to bed the rumours that were circulating about his imminent withdrawal from the tournament due to injury.
In doing so, the Swiss star improved his record against Lopez to 13-0 with a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory.
“I played a very clean match, I couldn’t be happier,” Federer said. “Overall I felt better. It’s exactly, I guess, what I needed going into the next round.”
The next round will see Federer face Philipp Kohischreiber.
In the other match, Gael Monfils retired due to injury leaving David Goffin to advance to the fourth round after Goffin led 7-5, 5-1.
In the Women’s Singles, Elina Svitolina slid into the US Open fourth round after a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Shelby Rogers of the United States.
“It was very good level of tennis in the end of second set and the crowd was behind her,” Svitolina told the press afterwards. “It was tricky but I was very happy I could handle it . . .”
Svitolina will play Madison Keys in the fourth round.
