The Nigerian team fell short in their bid to secure promotion to the Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II as they were edged 2-1 by Namibia in Nairobi today.
Sylvester Emmanuel had earlier put up a brilliant display in the first rubber to defeat 27-year-old Jean Erasmus 6-1, 6-2, but the Nigeria team couldn’t capitalize on the good start as unfortunate circumstances dented their chances in the subsequent rubbers.
Christian Paul sustained an injury in the second rubber and had to retire whilst trailing Tuki Jacobs 1-6, 2-3, while the duo of Joseph Imeh and Sylvester Emmanuel were narrowly beaten 7-6(1), 6-4 by Jean Erasmus and Tuki Jacobs in the third rubber.
Namibia will now play in the Europe/Africa Zone Group II in 2019, while the Nigerian team will hope for a better outing and luck next year.
The Southern Africans will be joined in Group II by either Benin Republic or Kenya, who are presently in action.
