Mr. Joseph Oke, coach of tennis team, Techvibe of Jos, and player, Michael Michael praised the NCC for their part in the development of grassroot sports in the country and called on other corporate bodies to emulate the NCC so that the growth of sports in the country can be accelerated.
Speaking last weekend during the NCC Tennis League match clash between Team Goshen and Team Techvibe at the Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin, Mr. Oke and player, Michael called on other corporate organizations and stakeholders to imitate the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC in sponsoring other sports other than football.
“Athletes in Nigeria are frustrated. If you see this and you know that N7million is involved, you will put in all your effort. There will be seriousness, discipline, target, determination and focus,” Mr. Oke, said.
“It is important to harness budding sports talents at the grassroots. Without the grassroots, sport’s growth cannot be guaranteed. Do not forget that the current athletes are getting old and they will not be there in the next 10 years. Some of them will marry, some will give birth and others will get other things and leave. Grassroot sports development is very important.”
“There will always be a spill over with what the NCC has started now. It will encourage stakeholders including coaches to look out for undiscovered budding talents.”
He further stated, “other stakeholders, sports lovers and other coaches should encourage the young athletes. We need to encourage them to prevent them from becoming social deviants and threats to the society.”
