At the Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin, over the weekend, visitors, Team Civil Defence trounced Team Optiwebb 6-1 in their NCC Tennis League match.
The win, being their third consecutive victory, leaves Team Civil Defence in third place with 3 points on the Blue Group standings, while Team Optiwebb languish in fourth on the log with just a single point.
Team Optiwebb’s only win came when Nonso Madueke, leading by a set (7-5), trailed 5-2 (2nd set) to Uche Oparaoji in the Reverse Singles, scratched because he was feeling ill.
The 2015 inaugural NCC League winners had, however, secured the tie on the first day with Madueke beating Emmanuel Ikakah 6-1, 6-3 in the 1st Men’s Singles, and Abdulmumuni Babalola defeating Uche Okparaoji of Team Optiwebb 6-2, 6-4 in the second match.
Nigeria’s female No. 1 player, Christie Agugbom then thrashed Ngozi Dirisu of Team Optiwebb 6-0, 6-0 in the Ladies Singles, while the Civil Defence’s duo of Abdulmumuni Babalola and Michael Chima combined to edge the pair of Isaac Emeruwa and Henry John 6-2, 6-4 in the Men’s Doubles.
Former National Champion, Clifford Enosorogbe stepped up to win the 2nd Reverse Singles, beating Isaac Emeruwa 6-1, 6-0.
In the Mixed Doubles, Abdulmumuni Babalola teamed up with Christie Agugbom to complete the rout as they thrashed Optiwebb’s pair of Oluchi Ozurumba and Henry John 6-3, 6-1.
