The Zenith Bank “Next Generation” Tennis Masters tournament, which served off on Tuesday, 24 April came to a fascinating close on Saturday, 28 April.
In the Girls’ category, teen sensation Oyinlomo Quadri maintained her level of ruthless efficiency as she thumped Toyin Asogba to claim the Girls’ title in Lagos.
Quadri had outclassed each and every one of her opponents by a 9-1 scoreline, and in Saturday’s final, she didn’t have anything different in mind as she romped to another 9-1 win against Toyin Asogba, whom she had beaten in the group stage by the same scoreline, of course.
The Boys’ final between Philip Abayomi and Godsgift Timibra was evenly contested for, but not before Abayomi, who’s been almost unplayable all week, stormed into a 6-2 lead early on.
Timibra regained composure to reduce the deficit to 5-6 and almost turned the match on its head to complete a stunning comeback. But Abayomi held his nerves to claim a 9-7, clinching the Boys’ title in emphatic fashion and staying unbeaten throughout the weeklong tournament at the Tennis Centre of the National Stadium in Lagos.
The tournament which is being bankrolled by Zenith Bank under the auspices of the International Tennis Academy featured the best eight boys and girls in the 18s category and also helped to prepare them for the senior tournaments like the CBN Senior Championship and NCC Tennis League which are expected to start in the second quarter of the year.
