Few days after his crushing defeat to Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open in Melbourne, Rafael Nadal, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, has made public his engagement to his longtime girlfriend, Xisca Perello, with the couple set to tie the knot later this year.
The pair started dating in 2005, the year Rafael Nadal won his first Grand Slam title – the French Open as an 18-year-old – and are planning to hit the altar in Mallorca, the birthplace of the Spanish superstar.
According to Hola! magazine, Nadal, 32, proposed to Perello last May during a romantic trip to Rome, but are only making the news public now.
“Obviously, I have the intention of forming a family. I love children and I would like my children to do what they like,” Nadal previously told the British publication.
As for Xisca, 30, also known as Mery, Nadal’s future wife is said to be an insurance worker and business graduate, per the Daily Mail.
Xisca was spotted in the stands during the Australian Open final last week, where her fiancé was hoping to become the first man in the Open Era to win every Grand Slam event at least twice, but came up short in the final.
It was only the second time she joined Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open. In a previous interview, she stated she chooses to stay away from tournaments Nadal plays in so as to let him focus completely.
