Rio Open: Dominic Thiem has it easy, but Gael Monfils made to suffer for win

Defending champion Dominic Thiem eased into the second round of the Rio Open, while Frenchman Gael Monfils was made to work hard for his win.

Fresh from winning the Argentina Open on Saturday, Thiem continued his good form on clay as he beat Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-2, 7-5 to set up a Round of 16 clash with Spain’s Pablo Andujar.

Gael Monfils, meanwhile, earned a dramatic 7-5 3-6 7-5 victory over Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos.

The Frenchman saved a match point at 4-5 in the deciding set as he broke Zeballos to bring things back on serve and then he broke the Argentinian again in his next game before wrapping up the match on his own serve.

The Frenchman will face top seed Marin Cilic in the Round of 16. Cilic is playing his first tournament since he reached the Australian Open final in January.

Argentine Diego Schwartzman also advanced as Norwegian Casper Ruud retired while trailing 4-1 in the opening set, while third-ranked Pablo Carreno Busta beat qualifier Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 6-1 and seventh seed Pablo Cuevas overcame Thiago Monteiro 6-7 (5-7), 7-6(10-8), 6-3.
