Top seed Roberto Bautista Agut fought off stiff competition from Taylor Fritz in the second set to progress to the Semis of the Winston-Salem Open with a 6-2, 7-6(3) win.
The 29-year old Spaniard edged Fritz in 89 minutes without facing a breakpoint.
In his post-match interview, he said, “I think it was a great match. I played very solid… I played very aggressive.” Well, if he hadn’t, we’d have had a younger semi-finalist in the 19-year old Taylor Fritz.
Baustista Agut who will be playing his fifth semi-final of the season, will face Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, who defeated Croatian Borna Coric 6-4, 7-6(2).
There was also further display of sheer brilliance at the New Haven, as No. 2 seed Dominika Cibulkova edged past Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in thrilling straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the Connecticut Open semi-final for the first time.
Cibulkova raced off to a 5-0 lead in the second set, before needing five games to finish off Pavlyuchenkova.
After the match, she said, “she made it extremely tough for me in the end. I was playing very well in the whole second set, but then she started playing even better. I had four match points, and she hit ace every time so I couldn’t do much about it. But I just kept fighting and I said to myself, OK, this one’s going to be yours.
Cibulkova will play Elise Mertens of Belgium in the semis who also advanced after coming off a walkover victory over Shuai Zhang, who withdrew due to an arm injury.
