Reigning champion Roger Federer reached his 14th Australian Open semi-final with straight sets victory over Czech’s 19th seed Tomas Berdych on Wednesday.
Federer, who’s yet to drop a set in this tournament so far, almost faltered in the opening set as Berdych quickly went 3-0 up. At 5-3 up and serving for the set, the 32-year-old Czech unfathomably lost his composure and let Federer in, there was no looking back for the Swiss great thereafter as he clinched a 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.
Federer said of his 20th win over Berdych in 26 meetings: “I was very happy to get out of the first set, I think it ended up being the key to the match. Tomas was great.”
Federer will continue his bid for a sixth Australian Open title when he faces South Korea’s sensation Hyeon Chung in the Last Four on Friday.
