All-time great, Serena Williams has returned to tennis action and is set to compete at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, TennisNG has learnt.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion is reportedly set to make her comeback at the MWTC against a yet-to-be confirmed opponent.
Williams, 36, has not been in competitive action since winning the Australian Open back in January, and also took out time from the sport to give birth to her first child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., in September.
Although, the tournament is only open to male players, it is claimed that Williams will play on Saturday December 30 (same day as the Final) at Zayed Sports City, in what is a massive boost for the tournament and tennis fans in the UAE. Her opponent hasn’t been announced but it is believed she will face a fellow Grand Slam champion.
Ticket holders for day 3 can attend Williams’ match. This is the first time a women’s tennis match will take place at the MWTC.
The Abu Dhabi showpiece, taking place from December 28-30, had witnessed numerous withdrawals with Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic all pulling out in recent days.
Serena Williams is planning to defend her title Down Under and playing in Abu Dhabi will be the start of her preparations for the opening major of the year at Melbourne Park.
