World no. 1 Simona Halep made light work of Eugenie Bouchard as she beat the Canadian 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday to progress to the third round of the Australian Open.
Halep, whose ankle had been a concern going into the match, was on fine form and needed just 65 minutes to work her magic on Margaret Court Arena.
“I think I played pretty well tonight,” Halep said in a post-match interview.
On her ankle, she added: “Even if I’m a little bit injured, I played pretty well and I moved really well…I feel the pain, but I didn’t think about it.”
Halep will face Lauren Davis in the third round.
In the Men’s Singles, Alexander Zverev won the all-German clash as the young gun beat Peter Gojowczyk on Thursday.
The world No 4, just 20, took almost two hours to put away the 62nd-ranked Gojowczyk 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on Hisense Arena.
Zverev will face another “NextGen” star Chung Hy-eon of South Korea in the next round on Saturday
Also, Juan Martin del Potro needed four sets to advance as he beat Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 to reach the third round in Melbourne.
