Tenth seed Sloane Stephens won the battle of the Americans as she prevailed 6-4, 6-4 over Madison Keys to reach her maiden French Open final in Paris today.
Stephens, the reigning US Open champion, will look to secure a second Grand Slam title when she squares off against world number one, Simona Halep in Saturday’s final.
Romania’s Halep registered a 6-1, 6-4 win over Spanish world number three, Garbine Muguruza to progress to her third final at the Roland-Garros.
She lost both of the previous ones in three sets, to Maria Sharapova in 2014 and to Jelena Ostapenko in 2017.
”I will try my best,” Halep told the crowd at Court Phillipe Chatrier, ”and hopefully I will be better than last year.”
Halep’s win over Muguruza meant the Romanian will hold on to the WTA number one spot when the updated rankings are released.
Halep and Stephens have met 7 times in the past, with the former winning 5 of those encounters.
