Sloane Stephens, who in a month has jumped more than 900 positions in the world rankings, has defeated ninth seeded Venus Williams 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 to reach her first major final at the US Open.
“I have no words to describe what I’m feeling, what it took to get here, just the journey I’ve been on,” Stephens said after the match. “I have no words.”
Sloane Stephens will now go on to face No. 15 seed Madison Keys, who put on a thrilling masterclass display to trounce CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2 in just 66 minutes. And like Stephens, this also will be Keys’ first major final.
“It still doesn’t feel real,” 22-year old Madison Keys said. “I am still shaking.”
This will be the first all-American US Open Final since 2002, when Serena Williams defeated her sister, Venus.
It will be the first time Americans Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys have reached a Grand Slam final.
