Sylvester Emmanuel put up an absolutely incredible performance to stun Nigeria’s number one, Joseph Imeh 7-5, 6-4 and win the Vemp Open Tennis Championship in Abuja.
Imeh started strongly as he raced to a 5-2 lead in the opening set, but couldn’t finish off Sylvester, who had started to fight back before rain caused an interruption. Upon resumption, Sylvester turned the tables to complete a stunning opening set comeback. The 20-year-old drew level and proceeded to take the first set in magnificent fashion.
Imeh tried to make a comeback in the second set, but Sylvester remained composed to seal victory and clinch his second title in the capital city, three months after his CBN Senior Open triumph.
Elsewhere, in the women’s final, second seed, Blessing Samuel defeated Loveth Donatus 6-1, 7-6(4) to be crowned champion.
Blessing romped to a 6-1 first set win and was in cruise control in the second. She had taken a 5-2 lead before rain interrupted. Upon return, Loveth mounted a spirited comeback to draw level and force a tiebreaker, but was unable to force a third set as Blessing settled in to take the tiebreaker and close out the match, capping off a sensational week in Abuja.
