Team VGC Lions fell to another consecutive embarrassing 7-0 defeat in the ongoing NCC Tennis League when they hosted Team Civil Defence on Saturday 9th Sept. through to Sunday 10th at the VGC Club Lekki, Lagos.
Team Civil Defence had already pummelled Team Oluyole 7-0 in their second game of the season at Ibadan, and so, came into this game in very high spirits.
In the first game of the Men’s Singles, former National Champion, Clifford Enosorogbe of Team Civil Defence beat Martin Abamu 6-3, 6-2.
In the second, Stanley Madueke of Team Civil Defence made light work of Pius Aneikan in the first set by winning 6-2, and was already 5-0 up in the second set before Pius Aneikan retired due to injury.
In the Ladies Singles, former National top 10 player, Lovette Donatus of Team VGC Lions bowed to Dala hard court title holder and Nigeria’s female No. 1 player Christie Agugbom 6-4, 6-4.
The 2015 inaugural NCC League winners completed the routing of the hosts in the Men’s Double as the pair of Abdulmumuni Babalola and Michael Chima defeated the duo of Martins Abamu and Onyeka Mbanu 6-3, 6-3.
The following day, Sunday, the visitors (Team Civil Defence) also outclassed the hosts in the remaining three games.
In the Reverse Singles, Clifford Enosorogbe trounced Onyeka Mbanu of VGC Lions 6-2, 6-2 as Nonso Madueke also thrashed Martins Abamu 6-1, 6-2.
The Mixed Doubles saw Abdulmumuni Babalola and Christie Agugbom hammer the pair of Martins Abamu and Lovette Donatus 6-1 in the first set and even though Martins and Lovette put up a good fight in the second set, it still wasn’t enough as they were edged 7-6(3).
