Team Kalotari lost their first game of the season 4-3 when they hosted Team Muller at the Port Harcourt Club, Rivers State, during the weekend in the ongoing NCC Tennis League.
Both teams went into the match having not lost a single game so far this season and as a result, it was expected to be a highly contested duel.
It certainly didn’t disappoint!
In the first match of the Men’s Singles, 22-year old Christian Paul of Team Kalotari fell to defeat at the hands of fast rising star Joseph Imeh of Team Muller. Joseph who was the runner-up at the CBN senior championships lost the first set 2-6, but rallied back to win the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the second, Emmanuel Sunday of Team Kalotari edged Emmanuel Idoko 7-5, 6-2 to set the score at one all for both teams.
The Ladies Singles saw Blessing Samuel of Team Kalotari take on Team Muller’s Ronke Akingbade who’s ranked in the women’s top 10. Ronke took the first set, 6-2, and was 5-0 up in the second set before Blessing roared back, saving match points more than once to stun Ronke 7-6(5). Blessing then trounced her in the third set 6-3
In the Men’s Doubles, the duo of Joseph Imeh and Mohammed Mohammed of Team Muller beat the pair of Christian Paul and Emmanuel Sunday 7-5, 6-3.
Christian Paul of Team Kalotari couldn’t do enough as he was beaten by Emmanuel Idoko 7-5, 6-3 in the 1st Reverse Singles, making up for his Singles defeat the previous day, and Team Muller ‘s Joseph Imeh further cemented his team chances of victory for the weekend as he pummelled Emmanuel Sunday 6-2, 6-0.
In the Mixed Doubles, Ikechukwu Iloputa and Blessing Samuel of Team Kalotari made a pair to reduce the total deficit as they thrashed the duo of Mohammed Mohammed and Ronke Akingbade 6-4, 6-1.
