Team Offikwu Beat Team Ndoma-Egba to Maintain Unbeaten Run

Action returned to the White Group during the weekend in the ongoing NCC Tennis League.
Team Ndoma-Egba hosted Team Offikwu at the National Stadium, Abuja in what was a thoroughly entertaining clash.

Defending champions, Team Offikwu beat Team Ndoma-Egba 5-2 to comfortably sit atop the White Group standings and book a semi-final place.

In the first match of the Men’s Single, Emmanuel Paul of Team Ndoma-Egba faced Shehu Lawal of Team Offikwu. It was a walkover for Shehu in the 1st set as he thrashed Emmanuel 6-1. Emmanuel then tried to make a comeback in the 2nd set, but couldn’t as he lost the match 6-1, 6-4.

The second match saw two former national champions square off. Team Ndoma-Egba’s Thomas Otu played Henry Atseye of Team Offikwu. Henry got off to an early start leading 3-0 in the first set, with Thomas Otu being unable to make any inroads on Henry’s service games. Thomas suddenly regained his composure to bring the game to 3-all in the 1st but eventually got beaten 6-3. In the second set, Thomas Otu showed why he was once a national champion; smashing forehand after forehand to keep Henry off balance, and then win 6-4 to take the match to its 3rd set.

In the 3rd set, Thomas Otu showed will and strength to win the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory to set the total score at 1-all for both teams.

In the Ladies Singles, Sarah Adegoke of Team Offikwu beat Team Ndoma-Egba’s Airhunmwunde Osariemen 6-3, 6-4 to put them on a backfoot.

The Men’s Doubles saw the pair of Thomas Otu and Taiwo Owolabi (Team Ndoma-Egba) team up against Henry Atseye and Shehu Lawal of Team Offikwu. The extra firepower of Henry and Shehu gave Team Ndoma-Egba no chance as they succumbed to a 7-5, 6-4 defeat.

At the end of the first day, Team Offikwu led 3-1.

The following day saw the most one-sided match of the weekend in the 1st Reverse Singles as Thomas Otu of Team Ndoma-Egba played Shehu Lawal (Team Offikwu). Shehu lost the first set 6-3 and was totally outclassed in no time in the second as he lost the match 6-3, 6-0.

That set the total score at 3-2 with Team Offikwu still leading.

In the 2nd Reverse Singles, Emmanuel Paul (Team Ndoma-Egba) battled former national champion Henry Atseye. Emmanuel took the first set 6-4, he (Emmanuel) was strolling to another victory after going 4-2 up in the 2nd set before Henry bounced back to win 7-5, taking the match to its 3rd set.

An injured Emmanuel couldn’t do much in the 3rd, as he was beaten 6-2 to dash his team’s hope of winning for the weekend.

In the final match, the Mixed Doubles, the duo of Thomas Otu and Rose Abu (Team Ndoma-Egba) lost 7-6(3), 6-3, 11-9 to the pair of Shehu Lawal and Sarah Adegoke (Team Offikwu).

Team Offikwu remain unbeaten in the League.
