The very best of Nigerian Tennis was on display during the weekend as Teams Muller and Optiwebb of the Blue Group faced off at the National Stadium, Lagos, from Saturday 26th through to Sunday, 27th, in what was a thrilling encounter.
In the first match of the Men’s Singles, Emmanuel Idoko of Team Muller edged Emmanuel Ikakah of Team Obtiwebb 6-2, 6-4. Team Obtiwebb’s Emmanuel Ikakah had a problem in utilizing his serves against Emmanuel Idoko of Team Muller, and it was to cost his him dearly as the match wore on. He lost the match in straight sets.
In the second match, still the Men’s Single, Joseph Imeh of Team Muller took on Uche Okparaoji of Team Optiwebb in what was a tough encounter. Joseph Imeh who was the runner-up at the 2017 CBN Senior Championship, started very slowly against the left-handed Uche Okparaoji, but that didn’t stop him from taking the first set 6-3. The second set saw more intriguing action as Joseph Imeh fell behind 2-0 early on, he rallied back to reduce the deficit, but couldn’t do enough as he was beaten in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
At the end of the second match of the Men’s Single, Team Muller was leading Team Optiwebb 2-0.
There was further action in the Ladies’ Singles as Ronke Akingbade of Team Muller played Oluchi Ozurumba of Team Optiwebb in what was a one-sided affair. Ronke showed speed and athleticism to outclass Oluchi Ozurumba 6-2, 6-0.
The Men’s Doubles saw Joseph Imeh and Mohammed Mohammed of Team Muller battle Sunday Emeruwa and John Henry of Team Optiwebb. Joseph Imeh and Mohammed combined brilliantly, putting together their key strengths to defeat Team Optiwebb’s Sunday Emeruwa and Henry in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The day was wrapped up with Team Muller leading Team Optiwebb 4-0.
The second day was graced with even more thrilling, unpredictable displays.
In the first Reverse Singles, Emmanuel Idoko of Team Muller played Uche Okparaoji of Team Optiwebb. Emmanuel Idoko raced into a 4-1 lead early on, before taking the first set 6-2. In the second set, Emmanuel Idoko surrendered a 3-1 lead to lose the set 7-6(5). Uche Okparaoji went on to stun Emmanuel in the third set to win the match, 2-6, 7-6(5), 10-4.
The second Reverse Singles saw Mohammed of Team Muller take on Sunday Emeruwa of Team Optiwebb in what was an interesting match. Mohammed took the first set 6-2, before going down 6-2 to Emeruwa. He kept his cool in the deciding tie break to win the match 6-2, 2-6, 10-8.
The Mixed Doubles was the last match of the weekend and it was Joseph Imeh and Deborah Gbadamosi of Team Muller against John Henry and Oluchi Ozurumba of Team Optiwebb. Team Muller after taking the first set 6-4, let themselves down with their poor serves and a lot of faults, and gave Team Optiwebb the chance to combine well to take the second set 6-3 and eventually stun them in the tie break decider to win the match, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
At the end of the weekend actions, Team Muller defeated Team Optiwebb 5-2 to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
In other matches in the Blue Group, Team Kalotari completely destroyed Team VGC Lions 7-0 at the Port Harcourt Club, Rivers State, while Team Oluyole continued their poor start to the season, losing 0-7 to Team Civil Defence at the Adamasingba Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo State.
