The Nigerians put up solid performances to better their foreign counterparts in the first round of qualifying on Saturday.
Nigeria’s no. 1 Joseph Imeh was utterly ruthless in his match against Chilean, Diego Fernandez Flores as he romped to a 6-0, 6-3 win to set up a second round qualifying clash with India’s Anurag Nenwani today, Sunday.
Barcelona-based Sylvester Emmanuel also moved into the second round with a commanding display against Adebola Obasoto, who’s based in Ireland, winning 6-1, 6-2. Emmanuel will now square off against Giovanni Samaha of Lebanon for a place in the Main Draws.
Former national champion, Clifford Enosoregbe fell out to countryman, Audu Emmanuel in a tight three sets encounter. Emmanuel bounced back from an opening set defeat to stun Enosoregbe 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Emmanuel will now have to get past Frenchman Alexandru Danes in today’s second round clash to seal a main draws berth.
Veteran Taiwo Owolabi failed to join the train as he fell to a 1-6, 3-6 defeat at the hands of Singh Hardeep Sandhu of India, while Idoko Emmanuel lost to another Indian, Vinod Sridhar 3-6, 6-7.
Second round of qualifying will continue today, Sunday at the Tennis Complex of the National Stadium in Abuja from 10.00am Nigerian Time.
