It didn’t take long for us to witness the biggest casualty at this years’ Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship, as the tournament’s numero uno, Karim Mohamed-Mamooun lost scandalously to Netherland’s Stephan Fransen 6-2, 6-2 in the Men’s Singles event.
In other matches concerning Nigerian representatives, Abdulmumuni Babalola, Clifford Enosoregbe and Joseph Imeh had similar fortunes as they crashed out after losing to their foreign counterparts .
In Court 2, Babalola lost to Frenchman Johan Sebatien Tatlot 0-6, 3-6, while On Court 8, Great Britian’s Andrew Watson defeated Nigeria’s No 1, Clifford Enosoregbe 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the Men’s singles event.
Imeh however retired in his match against Serbia’s Ilija Vucic having lost the first set 1-6.
The fortunes of the Nigerian contingents was no different in the Women category as Oyinlomo Quadri crashed out of the the tournament in the very first round after been bashed by Sweden’s Brenda Njuki 6-2, 6-0 in just over an hour.
In other matcches, Austria’s Melanie Klaffner defeated Sylvia Chidera Oreigbemileke Okafor 6-1, 6-0.
Adetayo Adetunji, Christopher Bulus, Sarah Adegoke, Thomas Otu, Henry Atseye, Andrew Itodo, Pat Onebamhoin will all be in action later today. Hopefully they’ll give Nigerians some reason to smile.
