Venus, Kerber out of Wuhan Open

Venus Williams’ defence of the Wuhan Open title came to an end on Wednesday as the former world number one crashed to a 6-2 6-2 defeat to Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova.

It was a poor serving performance from an out-of-sorts Williams, who sent down 7 double faults, and won just 49% of her first serve points.

The 31-year-old Kuznetsova moves on to the quarter-finals, where she will play either Caroline Wozniacki or Agnieszka Radwanska.

World number one, Angelique Kerber is also out of the tournament, following a dramatic 6-7 7-5 6-4 loss to Czech, Petra Kvitova.

Bother lefties put on a show for the Wuhan crowd, but it was Kvitova who eventually edged a gripping three-hour-22-minute contest after missing a multitude of match points.

She will play British number one, Johanna Konta in the last eight.
