World No.1 Simona Halep advanced to the Last 16 of the Cincinnati Open after beating Ajla Tomljanovic in a match was delayed by rain.
Halep was two games away from sealing victory when rain interrupted the match. The duo, however, returned on Thursday to see it through, but another downpour caused further delay. Upon resumption, finally, the Romanian powered to victory, claiming a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.
“It was really difficult because we were waiting so much, but I’m really happy I could go through this,” Halep said. “It was tough but I’m very happy to play tonight again.”
The Romanian will now play Ashleigh Barty for a place in the quarterfinals. However, there wouldn’t be much time before the Last 16 clash against Ashleigh Barty, as the duo are scheduled to play in a few hours.
Halep leads Barty 1-0 in career meetings with the win coming at the semis of the Coupe Rogers last week where the French Open champion went on to capture her third title of the season. Another victory would see her stay on course for back-to-back titles.
