Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia produced a stunning fightback against Caroline Wozniacki to seal a semi-final spot at the expense of world no. 1, Simona Halep.
Garcia bounced back from a disappointing first set to stun Wozniacki 0-6, 6-3, 7-5, and then only had to wait for the result of the final round-robin match in Singapore. And fortunately for her, Elina Svitolina beat Simona Halep 6-3, 6-4 to ensure Garcia topped the Red Group.
Wozniacki, who had been in impressive form and had already qualified for the semis, was certainly disappointed to have lost the match.
“I feel like I should have won that match, but it is what it is,” said Wozniacki. “I had the chance to serve it out and I didn’t. That’s really it.”
In the other match, world no. 1, Halep fell to a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.
Halep had begun the week with an impressive win over Garcia but failed to build on that early momentum, going down in straight sets to Wozniacki and, today, Friday, to Svitolina.
The semi-final line-up on Saturday sees eighth seed Garcia take on American fifth seed Venus Williams, and sixth seed Wozniacki up against Czech third seed Pliskova.
Should Karolina Pliskova win the title on Sunday, she’ll dethrone Halep to become the new world no. 1.
