The Zenith Bank “NextGen” Tennis Masters which served off today at the National Stadium Tennis Centre in Abuja had the players divided into two round robin groups of four and were seeded according to ITA rankings.
Group A of the the Boys’ category, had Michael Osewa, Tochukwu Ezeh, Philip Abayomi and Gabriel Friday, ranked as listed.
CBN Boys’ 18 & Under champion, Michael Osewa justified his top ranked position as he pummeled the CBN Boys’ 16 & Under winner Gabriel Friday 9-1, while Philip Abayomi got the better of Tochukwu Ezeh, winning 9-3.
Godsgift Timibra, Stephen Augustine, Michael Ayoola, and Emmanuel Jebutu completed Group B and matches were highly contested for. Top seed, Timibra fell to Michael Ayoola 6-9, while second seed Stephen Augustine was narrowly edged 7-9 by Emmanuel Jebutu.
In the Girls category, Group A fielded teen sensation, Oyinlomo Quadri, Toyin Asogba, Omolayo Bamidele and Mariam Balogun.
As usual, Oyinlomo Quadri, who sensationally finished as a semifinalist at the African Junior Championship in Tunisia, wasted no time in stamping her authority in Lagos as she dismantled Mariam Balogun 9-1.
CBN Junior champion, Favour Moses, Omolade Aderemi, Kasarat Adegboyega and Rebecca Ekpeyong were left in Group B to slug it out and they did just that!
Favour Moses claimed a hard fought 9-6 victory over Rebecca Ekpeyong, while Kasarat Adegboyega fell flat against Omolade Aderemi as she was beaten 9-1.
Matches will continue tomorrow, Wednesday at 10am, with the top two finishers of each group playing each other in a cross semifinals.
