World number two, Serena Williams has pulled out of next week’s Wuhan Open because a continuing shoulder injury.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion also announced her withdrawal from the China Open in Beijing, which comes up the week after Wuhan.
“I am disappointed that I will not be able to compete at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open or the China due to continuing issues with my right shoulder,” Williams said in a statement.
The American however expects to be back for the WTA Finals, which hold in Singapore in the final week of October.
“I wish the tournaments great success and I’m sure the fans will enjoy some great tennis. I am focused on getting ready to compete at the WTA Finals in Singapore”, Williams continued.
Williams has played just eight tournaments this year, the fewest she has played in a season since returning from injury in 2011.
