Raonic pulls out of US Open with wrist injury

World No. 11 Milos Raonic is the latest high profile player to pull out of the US Open.

The Canadian has withdrawn because of a persistent wrist injury but said that he planned to return to action before the end of 2017.

The Canadian reached the quarter finals of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, but has been hampered all season by injury.

After losing his opening match at the Montreal Masters he pulled out of last week’s tournament in Cincinnati.Raonic joins 12-time major champion Novak Djokovic, 2016 US Open champion Stan Wawrinka and 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori in missing the tournament because of injuries.

Also sitting out the action at Flushing Meadows are 23-time major champion Serena Williams, who is pregnant, and two-time Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka, who is dealing with a custody case involving her baby son.

“I have too much respect for the US Open and my fellow competitors to take a spot in the draw when I know I cannot give full effort due to this injury,” he said.

Raonic, 26, also went on to say that he had a procedure on Wednesday to remove “portions of bone” that had been causing him discomfort for weeks.

The final Grand Slam of the season, The US Open starts on Monday at Flushing Meadows in New York.
