World number three, Garbine Muguruza crashed out of the Wuhan Open in China after losing 6-4 7-6 to Jelena Jankovic in the second round.
Muguruza seemed set for more titles when she stormed to the Roland Garros crown in June, but the 22-year-old Spaniard has endured an ordinary second half of the year, struggling to put wins together.
She did reach the semi-finals in Cincinnati, but that lone bright spot is almost lost amongst a string of disappointing defeats.
It was another one of those days when Muguruza struggled to find the court with her immense power, spraying around 42 unforced errors in the one hour and 40 minutes contest.
For former world number one, Jankovic, this was a continuation a decent run of results. She has backed up last week’s runner-up finish in Guangzhou with a big win over the reigning French Open champion.
Next up for the Serbian is a round of 16 tie against Czech, Barbora Strycova.
