There will be a hint of vengeance in the air when French Open champion, Garbine Muguruza makes her bow at the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Thursday.
The top seed takes on Anastasia Sevastova- the woman who upset the Spaniard in the second round of last month’s US Open.
Sevastova went on to reach the quarter finals in New York, continuing what has been a very fruitful second half of the year.
The Latvian reached the finals in both Mallorca and Bucharest, before coming through qualifying to make the round of sixteen at New Haven.
It was at New Haven that Muguruza briefly snapped out of her post-French Open slump- getting as far as the semi-finals- but she again drifted into her slumber at the US Open, where she came unstuck against today’s opponent.
Tokyo presents another chance for the Spaniard to rediscover that devastating Paris form, and she won’t be needing much motivation in Thursday’s opener.
She takes on the woman that beat her the last time she was on court.
I’m backing Garbine to get that revenge.
